BIOGRAPHY: !From the obituary of Wayne Vandal Masterson as reprinted in the
Vandal Newsletterof October 1995.
Wayne Vandal Masterson was born December 7, 1908 in Sawtelle, California to
Belle Morris Masterson and Thomas Vandal Masterson. Wayne grew up in and
around Los Angeles, California, graduating from Compton High School. He had a
life long love of travel and an inquisitive mind, which lead him on numerous
excursions of travel and mind.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and spent two years in China as
part of the Legation Guard in Peking. Following a journalistic bent, developed
in high school, he wrote for the Marine News Paper in China. Upon his return
to the United States, he worked with Naval Intelligence. In 1940, he married
Dahlia Pellegrin and in 1944 their only child Paul was born. Wayne worked in
the aircraft industry in Southern California from the mid 1940s through 1972
for such companies as Northrop, Hughes, and Douglas. He was a devoted husband
and father, who ensured that his son was well loved and prepared to take his
place in the world.
In 1973, Wayne and Dahlia moved from Los Angeles to Bull Shoals, Arkansas to
enjoy their retirement years. There they led a much more relaxed life, and
made many dear friends. Their home was marked by its natural setting and
"nature window" from which they enjoyed the many birds and "critters"
of the
area. In 1979, Dahlia succombed to cancer and Wayne pressed on without her. He
turned his attentions to a lifelong interest in geneology, tracing many family
lines but primarily the Vandal and Masterson families. He was fond of
attending the Vandal Family reunions in Colorado and later in West Virginia.
In July, 1985, he became the first Editor of the Vandal Family newsletter, and
served in that capacity until May 1991 when, at the age of 83, the rigors of
preparing the Newsletter became too burdensome. He continued to write articles
for the Newsletter and to correspond regularly with many friends and relatives,
with significant emphasis on geneology.
Wayne Vandal Masterson led a good and long life - he will be missed, but he
will not be forgotten because he left his legacy in the hearts and minds of
the people he touched. Do not mourn his death for he was ready to go. Instead,
honor his life by continuing his efforts to trace and record the history of
the Vandal Family. In the vernacular of his journalistic career - that's -30-. Wayne
Vandal MASTERSON and Dahlia Flora PELLEGRIN were married on 16 Apr 1940 in Compton,
, California. Dahlia Flora PELLEGRIN (daughter
of Joseph George PELLEGRIN and Viola LARCHER) was born on 16 Apr 1911 in Kemmerer,
, Wyoming. She died on 16 Aug 1979 in Bull Shoals, , Arkansas.
She was buried about 19 Aug 1979 in Inglewood, , California. !From
