Silvia Vandel finished grade school while at home but desired more education
and entered the Lamoni High School after she was twenty-five years of age, having
opportunity to work for board and room. She was graduated from the school in
three years, obtained a teacher's diploma, and taught many years, always trying
to build character as well as teach books. When the wife of her brother, Samuel,
died, Sister Vandel and her mother took the little daughter and reared her,
giving her Graceland advantages. This niece now is Sister Charles R. Hield (Nita).
In keeping the financial law, Sister Vandel was an outstanding example. Sometimes
it seemed with her that the scriptures were literally fulfuilled: "And it
shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer: and while they are
yet speaking, I will hear" (Isaiah 65:24) It is good to know people who
are loyal and true to their friends and their faith. | +704 | ii. | Samuel

Martha Jane
(Jenny) VANDEL was born on 7 Jun 1889 in Hamilton, Decatur, Iowa.
She died on 26 Oct 1906 in Clio, , Iowa. She was buried on 28 Oct
1906 in Pleasanton, , Iowa.54
!From obituary. Martha Jane Vandel was born in Hamilton township, Decatur
county, Iowa on June 7, 1889. She was the youngest of ten children of A.W.
and Martha Vandel. She was baptised into the Reorganized Church of the Later
Day Saints in April, 1905, and maintained a strong interest and abiding faith
in the doctrine of Christ as held by that people, until the end. There being
no branch of the church of her own faith in the vicinity where she lived, she
attended the services of the Christian church at Clio, and was actively
identified with its Sunday School as a class member.
Being the youngest child, she was the general pet of the family and continued
to be "father's baby" until the end. She was of an exceedingly sunny
and
joyous temperament, her vivacity and cheerfulness contributing largely to
lighten the cares of the family life. She passed away on October 26, 1906 at
the age of 17 years, 4 months and 19 days. The members of her Sunday School
class met at the home on the day of the funeral and contributed to the song
service as well as testifying their affection by a wreath of beautiful flowers. |
