Fernando Cortes Vandall was a farmer. He grew wheat, corn, oats & potatoes,
and they made about 50 lbs. of butter over the previous year.

Elizabeth Emily Fouche Vandall was born in Flemming County, Kentucy
August 11, 1829 and passed from this life Nov. 5, 1912. She was self
sacrificing, always anxious to do good and comfort others. Coming to Iowa in
pioneer days, no one but herself and her God knew of the trying hardships she
was called upon to endure. Many, many times she divided her scanty store with
hungry travelers not knowing where the next supply would come from, yet always
trusting that better days would come to her and her little family. Her
neighbors always held her in the highest esteem and her friends were numbered
by her acquaintances.
On being asked by a friend why she never complained, she replied, my
troubles are not interesting to others and in no way conduce to their
happiness. Many, many were her heartaches, yet she would meet you with a
cheerful countenance and always make the best of everything through life.
She united with the Medhodist church many years ago, but was unable to
attend church very often, but her faith always remained.
"As ye do it unto the least of these, ye do it unto me" was the religion
