In her younger days, Geneva Evelyn Vandall was a helper to her siblings and families.
As my brother says, "I knew that we had a new baby in our family when Aunt
Geneva arrived with her suitcase." In her younger days she saw to it that
the Elton Community Cemetery was cleaned up and mowed in time for Memorial Day.
She did that every single year until recent years when she could no longer do
it. She would call someone to do the work and pay them for their work. I can
remember my parents giving her money from time to time for that purpose. However,
she always saw to it that the work was done.
As I remember, that is the cemetery that one of the Vandalls donated for the
community cemetery. A number of Vandalls are buried there including several
of Geneva's sisters and brothers in law, and also Shouting Tom Vandall.
Geneva was a strong person. Approximately 10 years ago, around 1900, she took
her only surviving brother in law into her home and provided a home for him so
that he would not have to live alone. Also, she took into her home, several
of her older sisters who were widowed and ill. Her nickname was "Mattie". Geneva
Evelyn (Mattie) VANDALL and Harry Herman HICKS Sr. were married on 29 May 1938.
